Amazon return policy explained

Official source Amazon Return Policy — Amazon Customer Service (nodeId GKM69DUUYKQWKWX7). Always confirm on that page and in Your Orders; Amazon may change the policy at any time.

Amazon’s public return promise is simple on the surface: most items can go back within 30 days of delivery if they are in original or unused condition. Under that headline sit shorter windows for Apple products, longer windows for some registries and Renewed goods, non-returnable categories, possible fees, and a seasonal holiday extension. This guide walks through what Amazon’s own help page says — and where you should double-check your order.

Standard return window

For most items sold on Amazon.com, the return window is 30 days from delivery. Eligibility for a specific ASIN is shown on the product detail page before you buy and again in Order History after you order. A refund is issued after Amazon or the third-party seller receives the item and finds you eligible. Amazon notes it can take up to 30 days to receive and process a return (sometimes longer), and that refund posting times then depend on your payment method (for example, gift-card balance often credits in hours; credit cards often take several business days).

Items generally need to be returned in original or unused condition with tags, hygiene seals, and manufacturer packaging where applicable. Erase personal data from electronics before you send them back.

Exceptions and category windows

Amazon’s policy table lists several non-standard windows (always verify on the live page):

WindowExamples Amazon lists
7 daysUnread accidental Kindle Store digital books; undownloaded digital textbooks/educational content; some accidental Digital Music Store purchases via Alexa
15 daysApple brand products and Boost Infinite brand products sold new; Amazon Haul items over $3 (Haul items $3 and under are generally non-returnable)
90 daysSelect Amazon Renewed in Acceptable/Good/Excellent; most nonperishable Baby products; many Birthday/Custom Gift List purchases by someone other than the registry owner; mattresses (excluding crib mattresses)
180 daysMany Wedding Registry purchases by someone other than the registry owner
365 daysAmazon Renewed “Premium”; many Baby Registry purchases by someone other than the registry owner

Often non-returnable (among others Amazon lists): perishables; products that may pose health/safety risks if returned; shipping-restricted products; customized items; redeemable products; Amazon Pharmacy; pet medications; certain digital products; automobiles; “Final Sale” items (including trading card games, some discounted items, and Haul items $3 and under). If a Final Sale item arrives damaged, defective, or materially wrong, Amazon says to contact Customer Service.

Member perks

Amazon Prime does not replace the return window with a longer one on the policy page we reviewed — the standard clock is still typically 30 days from delivery for most goods. What Prime and Amazon’s network often improve is convenience: free returns at many nearby drop-off locations, and for eligible items, label-free / box-free options. Exact methods depend on the item and seller. Third-party sellers who fulfill themselves may require a U.S. return address, a prepaid label, or a refund without return — details are on Amazon’s third-party returns help.

Holiday extensions (2026)

Amazon’s seller communications for 2026 describe an extended holiday return window: items purchased November 1–December 31, 2026 can generally be returned until January 31, 2027, except Apple brand products, which can be returned until January 15, 2027. That extension is described as applying automatically to FBA and merchant-fulfilled orders on Amazon.com, with normal eligibility and refund rules otherwise unchanged. Confirm the dates that appear in your Order History; do not rely solely on a blog summary.

Receipt and order rules

Amazon returns are tied to your order, not a paper store receipt. Start from Your Orders. For gifts, Amazon’s policy says to use the order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt (ask the giver if needed). Do not mix items from separate orders in one return package. Each return label is order-specific.

How to return

  1. Open Your Orders and choose Return items next to the product.
  2. Pick a reason and follow the on-screen return method (drop-off, pickup, prepaid label, etc.).
  3. Return the item by the “return by” date shown in the confirmation email or Return Request tab.
  4. Watch refund status in Your Orders; timelines vary by payment type.

Amazon may charge fees in some cases (non-free shipping method, heavy/bulky returns, late drop-off after the return-by date, damage/missing parts, or restocking for certain opened software/games/collectibles). Amounts and rules are listed on the official Return Policy page — read them before you ship.

FAQ

Does the 30 days start at order or delivery?

Amazon’s policy language for most items is within 30 days of delivery. Your order page is authoritative for that line item.

Can I return a Marketplace (third-party) item the same way?

You still start in Your Orders, but the return often goes to the seller. Sellers must offer a U.S. return address, prepaid label, or refund without return. A-to-z Guarantee claims are a separate path if a seller does not cooperate — see Amazon’s help for that process.

What if my item is past the window but defective?

Amazon’s returns page points to manufacturer warranties and, for some cases, certified repairs. Do not assume a courtesy return; contact Customer Service and check the product’s warranty terms.

Are Pharmacy items returnable?

Amazon states Amazon Pharmacy items are not returnable or refundable; use Pharmacy help for assistance.
