Lowe’s return policy explained
Lowe’s frames satisfaction around bringing merchandise back to any U.S. Lowe’s store — with a hard requirement: valid proof of purchase. The headline window is 90 days for most new, unused merchandise. Under that sit aggressive 48-hour rules for major appliances and several power tools, 30-day rules for paint, TVs, many plants, and marketplace goods, and 365 days for trees/shrubs/perennials and certain Lowe’s commercial or rewards credit accounts.
Standard return window
Official language: most new, unused merchandise can be refunded or exchanged with receipt within 90 days of the original purchase date, unless noted in Return Policy Exceptions. CRAFTSMAN® branded battery and electric outdoor power equipment is also listed in the 90-day tier. Lowe’s states it does not accept returns without valid proof of purchase, though it will try to validate via physical/electronic receipt, order number, payment card/wallet, phone number, or MyLowe’s / Pro Rewards accounts. Refund verification systems may require photo ID.
Exceptions and category windows
| Window | Examples Lowe’s lists |
|---|---|
| 48 hours | Major appliances; ACs and evaporative coolers; paint sprayers; portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws; utility vehicles/golf carts/go-karts/motorized bikes; construction heat and parts; tile saws. Initiate within 48 hours of delivery or store pickup. Some sealed/unused exceptions and credit-account purchases may allow up to 30 days — read the 48-hour exceptions on the live page |
| 30 days | Liquid paint; TVs and electronics; water heaters; most outdoor power equipment; special-order custom blinds/window treatments; HVAC; plants excluding trees/shrubs/perennials; most third-party marketplace items |
| 90 days | Most new unused merchandise; CRAFTSMAN battery/electric outdoor power |
| 365 days | Trees, shrubs, perennials; purchases on LCA, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit, or Lowe’s Business Rewards (unless a shorter exception applies) |
Holiday décor rule: Christmas and Halloween items must be returned on or before the day of the holiday. Items purchased after the holiday are final sale. That is stricter than many big-box “January” holiday windows — see also Home Depot’s décor timing.
Nonrefundable examples: labor, installation, delivery/shipping (unless Lowe’s error), gift/merchandise cards, highway trailers, whole-house generators, as-is merchandise, paint samples, trading cards, and used items that may pose biohazard risk. Special-order configured products canceled/returned after 72 hours may incur a 20% restocking fee at the purchase store.
Outlet locations have largely final-sale rules with narrow appliance defect exceptions — Outlet purchases generally return only to the same Outlet.
Member / credit perks
Named Lowe’s commercial and rewards credit products extend many returns to 365 days, but Lowe’s Pay financing purchases do not qualify for those credit-card extensions and refund to the financing institution. Same-day third-party delivery (Instacart, DoorDash, Shipt, Uber, etc.) returns go to a retail store with proof of purchase; Lowe’s notes refunds as in-store credit for those channels.
Price adjustments
Lowe’s policy page also invites shoppers who find a lower price after purchase to chat or call 1-877-465-6937 so Lowe’s can review whether a price adjustment qualifies. Treat that as case-by-case — get confirmation in writing or on your receipt when possible. For retailer comparison, see Walmart price adjustments.
How to return
- Bring the item and proof of purchase to any U.S. Lowe’s store customer service desk (or use the order return barcode).
- Online: start from order history when a FedEx label is offered; otherwise use the store.
- Appliances/oversize: bring to store or call 1-800-445-6937 about home pickup.
- Allow up to about 7 business days for card refunds to post after processing.
FAQ
No receipt — can I still return?
Lowe’s states it does not accept returns without valid proof of purchase, but will attempt lookup via card, order number, phone, or rewards account. Do not assume a no-receipt cash refund.
BOGO returns?
Discounts are prorated; returning one item refunds the prorated amount, not necessarily the “free” item’s full shelf price.
Defective after the window?
Lowe’s points to Service Advantage (1-888-77-LOWES) and manufacturer warranty paths rather than assuming a late courtesy return.

How to document your purchase
Snap a photo of the receipt the day you buy — thermal paper fades within months. Save shipping confirmation emails in a folder named “returns 2026.” If you paid with a credit card that includes return protection or extended warranty, keep the statement PDF showing the charge; benefits teams almost always ask for it. Write serial numbers for electronics in the same note as the purchase and delivery dates.
When one holiday list spans several retailers, label each gift with store name and order number on a sticky note under the wrapping. That small step prevents a January scavenger hunt across marketplaces, big-box stores, and specialty shops. If someone else might return the item, include a gift receipt and tell them the deadline in plain language.
Refund timing expectations
In-store refunds to debit or credit often appear as pending within a few days, but banks can take longer to post. Mail returns add carrier transit plus the retailer’s inspection queue — January is the slowest month of the year for both. Check the retailer’s return-status page before you open a bank dispute; fighting a charge while a refund is already processing creates messy double work.
Gift-card or merchandise-credit refunds are common for gifts, missing receipts, or certain online tenders. Ask whether that credit expires. Many large U.S. chains no longer expire store credit, but state rules and banner policies still vary — get the answer in writing on the receipt or email.
When the help page and the store disagree
Shelf tags, register prompts, and handwritten manager notes on a receipt beat any blog summary, including ReceiptClock. If an associate’s explanation conflicts with the corporate help article, ask them to open the current policy page with you or to print what they are using. Escalate once if needed, then decide whether a manufacturer warranty path or a card benefit is smarter than arguing further.
Never invent a defect to slip past a closed change-of-mind window. Retailers share third-party return-authorization networks; suspicious patterns can follow you to unrelated stores. Defective products deserve honest claims with photos, model numbers, and dates. For coverage after a return window closes, see manufacturer warranty basics.
Track Lowe’s short windows
48-hour appliance clocks and holiday-décor cutoffs are easy to miss. ReceiptClock’s $9 one-time tracker will remind you before return windows close.
